Fall Programs
Fall is our favourite season here at Options, but it’s also a busy one! Get ready to head back to school, practice your writing, and get a jump on your supplemental essays with our slate of fall workshops.
These intensive study skills sessions are designed to help students be academically prepared for their educational futures. The sessions are instructional as well as practical, hands-on work sessions, and they are offered at the start of the school term to help students get a start on forming solid executive functioning habits. Students will leave the workshop armed with the knowledge, skills, strategies, and reference material required to prepare them for academic success. They will also leave the workshop with a concrete understanding of their own executive functioning strengths and weaknesses and with an individualized plan to help them develop as a student.

We will also address how to communicate with professors and teaching assistants, how to make use of a course outline, and how to set goals and practice effective time management. Students will leave the workshop armed with the knowledge, skills, and strategies required to prepare them for academic success.

The session will include a presentation that outlines the typical essay and supplemental writing prompts required by major Canadian universities and programs (e.g. UBC, Queen’s, Western). During this presentation, session leaders will also provide writing and time management strategies and sample essays from previous years’ successful applications. Students will then be given time to brainstorm and engage in practice writing exercises. Options Solutions writing coaches will give students one-on-one feedback on their drafts, and all students will leave with a clear direction on how to tackle and complete their application essays.

Writing Workshop serves as an accessible introduction to university-level writing, and students will leave the sessions with an understanding of effective written language use. We accommodate students working on a variety of projects all in the same session, and our writing coaches work personally with students on their unique pieces.

During the session, students will learn how to answer typical interview questions and have the opportunity to tackle some sample questions as a group. They will then practice in pairs and give each other feedback, as well as record their responses for analysis. Programs that require the video interview include commerce at UBC, the University of Toronto, and York University, as well as engineering at the University of Toronto and Waterloo.

Winter and Spring at Options means goal setting, planning, and prepping! Join us for our winter and spring workshops to make this season the most productive yet.
This two-hour workshop is designed to help grade 10 and 11students and their parents prepare for 2023-2024 course planning. Options Solutions president Melinda Giampietro will walk students through the process of course selection. The session will be interactive and dynamic. There will be a course simulation and also a thorough question and answer period. Students will leave with a clearer understanding of university requirements and what courses they need for post-secondary school admission.

The goal of this boot camp is to relieve the stress students feel about the application process and to kick start the process in July. Students will leave the July boot camp with a solid start to the Common Application and other US applications. Students are encouraged to attend the full series, as each session will be unique and valuable.

The Casper exam is a situational judgement test that is typically used by nursing and medical school programs to determine behavioural tendencies of their applicants.This two-hour session prepares students for the typed response section and the video response section of the Casper exam. During the session, students will review the format of the Casper exam and determine the qualities that schools are looking for in their responses. They will then practice both written and verbal responses and be given feedback regarding their responses

This three-day boot camp is designed to give current grade 9, 10, 11, and 12 students a solid understanding of English grammar, writing conventions, and essay basics, so they can approach essay writing with the knowledge and skills necessary for success. Students will learn the essentials to writing expert argumentative essays, the most common essay genre they will write in high school. This session will be a great way to hone students’ writing skills while classes transition to an online model. Materials will be provided.

This interactive, fast-paced workshop is aimed at providing students with the theory and practice to succeed in their English studies at the grade 11 and 12 level. It will give students the skills and confidence they need to succeed, making their future English courses easier and more enjoyable. Furthermore, the active reading, planning, and essay writing skills are a great way to prepare for the Graduate Literacy Assessment (GLA), a new British Columbia provincial exam for students in grade 10 and 12.

Whereas Options’ other English programs focus on developing students’ technical writing skills, this two day course will help expand students’ ability to express their authentic voice through writing.

Join us for a 4-hour exam, exam markingand a 3-hour debrief. Each student is given a cover sheet to help them understand their successes and identify their areas needing improvement. In order to get an accurate estimate of a student’s abilities, we use only officially released ACT and SAT exams. Taking practice tests helps students prepare for the stamina required on test day.

This workshop will help students understand and tackle the UK Personal Statement. The Personal Statement is an essential part of UK university applications for all post-secondary programs. Creating a strong Personal Statement is the best way for students to demonstrate their passions, skills and suitability for all programs and especially for competitive programs such as Law, Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine.
